Re: Frame and roll cage design

This is a little late since I've not been on the forum for a couple of weeks, but while I agree with what Brian and Cendiv37 say, I think that there is a difference between the chassis and a chassis brace. I have seen cars that used a 1", or smaller, chassis brace as the declared attachment poi...

Re: Frame and roll cage design

9.4.5.A says in part - "On Formula cars and single seat Sports Racing cars the vertical members of the main hoop shall not be less than 15 inches apart (inside dimension) at their attachment to the chassis." This gives a minimum width of the chassis at some point along the main hoop. Some ...

Re: More novice questions....

Steve - your comment about using the Nomex thread for sewing on patches. I'm thinking it might be safer to have cotton thread holding on the patch so that in case of fire the thread will burn and the patch will fall away rather than having Nomex thread holding a flaming patch on the suit. Most of th...

Re: brake line questions

Roger,

Most people use -3 for the brakes and -4 for the clutch, if that helps. I don't know that it makes any difference.

Re: In-Car Cameras

I would be looking for an HD system. Both GoPro and 20Twenty offer HD systems. I have an older GoPro Hero non-HD system. I am happy with the system except for one thing, no remote. I am often alone when I go racing and can't use the camera since I have no one to turn it on for me. I could turn it on...

Re: Formula Vee Meeting during the Runoffs

I see that in the latest issue of Fastrack that it says no action was required on a question because pump fuel is allowed 1/1/2010, but i missed the actual Fastrack announcement of that change. Is this spelled out anywhere? I checked Sept and Aug and couldn't find it. How will they police for all th...

Re: Still learning - coil failure - curse

Chris,

I agree with you, I think that the gearbox is cursed. You need to have an exorcism to rid it of evil spirits. Or have Lybarger douse it with holy water.

John,

If the sump is large enough to hold the entire engine oil supply so that no oil is in the case, you have a virtual dry sump.

Brian,

Also, these tires are so narrow, we run so much camber and we get so much roll that a pyrometer is almost useless.

This program is about the Audi racing effort last year. It has gotten great reviews in Autoweek and C&D. They said that it was an excellent study on what it takes to go sports car racing and to do endurance events. The last minute victory at LeMans over Peugeot created a lot of drama in the film...

Re: December Racecar Engineering Magazine and Vees

Brian, I think that wings that provide lift would be OK, the regs are concerned about generating downforce. Do you think that if we could get enough lift to have the car barely touching we could reduce the drag from those pesky tires enough to increase the top speed at Road America next year? Of cou...

Re: Trade: LB for a SB tranny

What 3rd gear does your box have and how complete is it? As I said, mine have 1:22 3rd's and are complete drum to drum. They don't have starters installed. You would probably want to keep your drums as I haven't used either box for 2 - 3 years. I have only run synthetic in the gear boxes. Let me kno...

I have a couple of Lybarger 1:22 short boxes and need a long box. Does your long box have a 1:22 or a 1:26 third? I tried to call but got your answering machine. You can reach me at (502) 863-0990. I am in Lexington, KY near SR Racing.

Re: trailing or leading arm rear suspension?

I gave Kevin's response some thought and I don't think that it is correct for the following reason: all the trailing/leading arms do under braking is transfer the rotational motion from the rear axle into the frame, centered around the rear axle centerline. The net result doesn't matter if the car i...

You guys need to take Steve's email to heart. Formula First was started by a couple of guys that saw a need and started working for a solution in a single Region and spread across the country. They wrote the rules, started the movement, did the cheerleading and got the racers together. It didn't inv...

Re: Fastrac rule proposal

Most Vees can run 40 minutes on 5 gal of fuel, or pretty close to it anyway. The runoffs at Mid-Ohio were 20 laps about 1:40, well for me it was about 1:43, and that works out to around 35 minutes. Throw in the pace lap and cool down lap and you are right at 40 minutes. I always started with about 4...

I had heard that the DVD for the 2007 Runoffs had been released but I can't find it on the SCCA Website. Does anyone know if it has been released and how to get a copy?

Re: On board camera suggestions

Steve, I can't send you a picture of the roll bar with the Hero 3 mounted as the car is at my brother's house 45 minutes away and the camera is out my house. We did have to use a piece of roll bar padding to space the camera out far enough for the "wrist strap" to work. I am using Energize...

Re: On board camera suggestions

Scott,

We got one of the Hero 3 cameras from SR Racing and used it at Gateway last year. We were able to strap it to the roll bar and got excellent video for all 4 sessions of the double-regional. We have multiple 2mb SD cards so we don't have to download at the track.
