Circuit of the Americas
We have a renter or 2 interested in doing the COA race (Feb 22-24th).
If we get 2 more firm we will probably be doing it. If you might be interested in doing it in a FST, let us know.

Re: remember "Pro Vee"?
Actually Greg Bruns touched wheels with someone. We (and he) thought that is when it started.
I remember Greg (Schings) and I talking to Mike V after the mishap, and Mike wasn't sure where he was. He has mostly recovered...

Yes for a 1200 FV, normal regional or National length. 4 gallons will do it. Many people run them.

and... Don't order directly from Fuel Safe, order from a dealer (like us). We have some in stock and are less expensive than Fuel Safe, ATL, etc.

Re: Pedals and slave cylinder
In case the OP doesn't respond soon: These appear to be the Wilwood floor mount pedal assembly. They are nice units and usually retail for about $200-250. They use the standard Wilwood or Girling compact master cylinders with either integral or remote resevoir. They have the dual brake bias with adj...

Butch,
I think you can say the same thing for your FST participation ? Only about 45 years to go!

Re: Wheel cover ban
Jim, Sure but is this what we want for the future direction of F Vee? No arguement with you, Dave. I am only defending MV for doing what was completely legal. Just like Brian, he found a legal method of improving his ride. Now it is up to the body to decide if it should be made illegal in the futur...

Michael, Re the spats: to me it's a stretch to call them bodywork when they are not attached to the body and even if they are deemed to meet the letter of the rules and don't think they meet the intent of the rule. Dave, I agree with the "spirit" thing in this case. But spirit means nothi...

Were there protests? If not, unless someone writes the CRB, there will be no action on it.
Since Mike made it through tech intact, they are legal.

Re: effect of exhaust leaks on engine power
If it is not detected in a leak down test it says the valves are sealing and your rings etc are ok. However two things can happen with a loose valve guide: 1. Dynamically the valve may not seat at one or more RPM points. The leak down test is only a static condition. 2. On the intake stroke the guid...

Re: effect of exhaust leaks on engine power
Jean,
Yes. Send it to one of us engine builders and we should will be able to match it up for size and weight. We would need the piston pin and ring set also.

Re: effect of exhaust leaks on engine power
Jean, The biggest thing you have to do is make sure the replacement piston matches the weights of the others. (within a gram)
The spacer doesn't have to be end gapped. You remove it with a couple pin pricks.

Re: Oil ring gap orientation
Oil ring gap: Don't worry about it. They won't stay in that position long anyways. (BTW, if you have the 3 part rings, you really have 3 gaps.) If you have the 2 part ring you only have one. ) Does your engine/car cool from the top of the cylinders or the bottom? You should have the deflectors insta...

Re: Power & Theroy
Not real easy to answer it all. But, at about 5000+ RPM the fan/gen takes about 5 HP. (the majority of that is the fan, assuming the battery is fully charged) Removing the fan/gen and cooling via duct work will introduce drag but without knowing the type of ducting it is difficult to determine the l...

Re: effect of exhaust leaks on engine power
Interesting, the engine builder was quite specific about this. We had a discussion about this as I was running a random exhaust last year. He always said there was a minimum length that worked great but couldn't be achieved in FV. From there the length had little effect on HP, as long as the length...

Re: effect of exhaust leaks on engine power
Brian is correct. It would take a massive leak or blockage to significantly hurt power. The ac/vw is a poorly designed induction/exhaust system. The exhaust ports actually flow better than the intakes which is backwards from a properly designed engine. That being, it would take a significant exhaust...

Re: Torquing head studs
I would say I find it difficult to have an equal amount of seal around the tube and the hole. All of the seals are offset one side. Well a bit of offset is ok. The way we do it is before torquing the head (it is in place, but not bolted down yet.) push the tubes around by bending slightly at the be...

Re: Torquing head studs
You will have to flex the top of the tube a little bit so that it is straight into the head. The tube will not be precisely straight. When looking at the hole you should see an equal amount of seal around the tube at the hole. I have never see one pop through the hole. You sure you have 1200 tubes a...

Re: Torquing head studs
Hi Jim: . Still I find it odd that the studs don't seem to hold the torque. You will have to hit them each probably a couple times, but they should get to 17-18 and stay there. If you have paper shims under the cylinders they will compress a bit over time (secs/mins) and you might have to do it 3 t...

Re: Torquing head studs
Jean, Not sure what you mean by saying the 'studs can't keep anything more than that'. ? They are either stretching and ready to break, or they are pulling out of the case. Yes, you really need to take them to 17-18lbs and not a pound more. (8mm studs) If you have an engine that has had them for a l...

Re: Gearbox lube
Steve is correct. You need an oil that higher shear strength properties. On the other hand you want a slightly lower "weight" for a racing box. A 75w90 is fine (verses 90W140 etc.) and there are many versions of it. (Many synthetics, Redline MTL, MT-90, etc.) A synthetic has a better "...

Redline 75w90 is also fine and Superlite is actually rated at 75w90. On a Vee trans you don't need the Shockproof stuff, but it won't hurt.
