Re: Another shoe question
My opinion, worth what you pay for it, is I wear the smallest shoe I can get my foot in. That's usually a half-size smaller than a street shoe for me. The driving shoe has no sides on the sole so it takes a lot less space than a tennie. I used bowling shoes until K-mart quit selling them for about $...

Area 7 Director Election
I’m starting this thread to request the assistance SowDiv racers in my campaign for the election as Area 7 Director on the SCCA Board of Directors. You have all received a mail list letter from one of the other candidates outlining his background. You may receive one from another candidate. All thre...

Re: runoffs live coverage from speedcast
The Friday coverage was OK for CSR and FA, but Saturday am was a mess. Got to see the FM race as a series of stills with the audio running two minutes behind and dropping in and out. Then SM was unavailable at all. The SRF race was OK until the last two laps, then it dropped off completely and I los...

Re: rear brake shoe springs
Thanks, Jim. Looks like something to put on the list for the off-season, get a count on my backing plates and fix a few up. Not that I plan to bend any more in the future, but stuff happens.

Re: rear brake shoe springs
Sorry about showing my lack of knowledge, but I have three or four backing plates stacked up with broken tabs, otherwise reasonably straight. (I'm a pack-rat.) Have not looked as close as possible at them, thought about whether the tab could be replaced, but they looked like they were tacked on. Do ...

Re: Lake Garnett Races 50th anniv.
As I remember, the Topeka paper reported the reason the races were cancelled after '72 was the "college students" in town for the races barracaded the main street of Garnett with empty beer cans four feet high. (But it was only 3.2 beer.) More likely it was the gradual change of safety req...

Re: VW Hub Caps
I thought "hub caps" were the metal covers on the front brake drums that cover the spindle nuts. You know, the ones that get knocked off when you don't give a full car width and two coats of paint in a corner. (I know, common term for wheel covers is "hub caps", for those of us o...

Re: SCCA license fees
While I was still trying to run with the vintage guys regularly, they didn't really like SCCA licenses, especially nationals, we didn't have the "vintage spirit". Guess it was the knuckles dragging and the drool that tipped them off, I was running F/F. So I went ahead and got the doctor to...

Re: Tech
Not trying to drum up business for SR, but would the FV book be appropriate? Maybe it would only have to be exerps from one or two chapters, not to burden them with the whole thing. Sorry, I have never really seen the F/V book. Finally got the book for F/F, but not the one for F/V yet. Don't know ho...

Re: Battery charging question
I used to use a lawn tractor battery all the time for the jumper, light and cheap. I've even had them in vees years ago. Got a FF once with a wheelchair battery in it. Now I use one for a jumper. Think about it, they are sealed and they are deep cycle, like the trolling batteries. I've recharged one...

"Thanks Mad Dog for pointing out a pet peeve of mine. You are complelety right. No more puking because the engine builder can't figure out the windage." Brian, I'm always in enough trouble with engine builders, I didn't make the comment to criticize any of them. I said I run as much oil as...

Re: Extended sump question
Seems like this could help clean up the dirty little buggars too. Couldn't we run a quart lower level on the dip stick if we had a quart more +/- at the pickup? Same amount of oil in the engine, just less at the front and rear seals and sloshing into the vent. Or is that where the windage comes in a...

Re: Extended sump question
I see different dimensions on every chassis as far as engine location. The newer ones seem less than the older ones, but I'm probably just getting old and cranky. The drop sump that (barely) fits my Citation hangs about 1/4" to 5/16" below the frame rail on the Protoform. So I'm cycling ov...

Re: fuel and tires at Regionals
I'll go ahead and supply the standard generic answers. 1) Depends on where you are, track and division. 1a) Some people will say that if you are a true beginner, no previous experience, find some decent used tires to use first. If you have, say several years of karting or similar experience, new tir...

Re: Sort of a poll
I ran every SowDiv race in 2008 season (Labor Day to Labor Day) both regional and national and I'm pooped. Skipped the fall R/R and will skip the R/R next weekend, so I'm 0 for 4 in 2009. Will start with the R/N in February. Will run one new track in division this year, if the race happens, think it...

Head and Neck Restraints
I have not yet seen any discussion on the note in the latest Fastrack about a request for comments about requiring some form of HNR. Apex and some of the door-slammer forums noted this and have threads going. I'm afraid I don't have as strong an opinion on this any more since I popped for a Hans (us...

Bill's got the car, looking for time to work on it around Ike repairs. Dropped off a couple of old VW manuals for him to use instead of cane stalks, we don't have corncobs in Lousiana. First question was where is the missing seat, latest was how does the shift link attach to the back of the transaxl...

Re: Bulb for Trouble Light
Thanks for all the info. Finished the project for now using the fan light, dropped the light once but onto insulation so no real test. Other updates, went to another Lowes and they had both 75 and 100-watt rough service bulbs, still have not found them at the local one. (Buying a lot of electrical b...

Bulb for Trouble Light
Working on a project in my attic. Burned out the bulb in one trouble light, the bulb in the other from my trailer has been used as much or more. Have 40-watt "rough service" bulbs to try to run them as cool as possible. Found no replacements at Walmart or Lowes, Sears had 100-watt for $4 e...

Re: Promoting Formula Vee
Nick, Be careful what you wish for, with the Runoffs moving to RA, next year's Sprints may become one of the biggest. Houston Region moved a race date to cover the vee birthday party and scheduled over the Sprints (cause their race chair said nobody from here goes anyway). I had to stay to hold on t...

Re: Rear shock and spring help.
Don't know how much I can help, but I'll add an uninformed 2 cents. The 12-inch spring seems long, but I don't know what your rear geometry looks like. The spring should let the adjuster start on the shock threads, otherwise it's usually too long. There are some older threads about rear end geometry...

Steve, You got me on that one, sorry to spread any mis-information. That's what I get for talking before thinking. Possibly was put on me by someone in tech when getting an annual. Looked back at an '07 GCR, a '94 GCR and my original '84 GCR and none said anything about throttle return springs. The ...

Re: Fastrac rule proposal
Guess I'll have to crank out a letter. I don't tend to use all of the practice/qualifying time at a track I'm familiar with, but I like to have it available when needed. Sounds like the intent was to reduce the national time from 45 minutes total P/Q time to 40 minutes total P/Q time. That's not a p...

Re: Sticky throttle cable
Per the GCR, you need two return springs on the throttle linkage. About 99% of the time that means on the carb, not sure tech would accept one on the pedal as one of the two. Not sure what the rule is for solo, usually it seems to be the same, but I've seen one get by. A spring on the pedal doesn't ...

Re: Trailer e-track install - best location for a FV?
If you are worried about the car moving up and down, I have seen an air bladder advertised, but you could probably use an old tire tube under the middle of the car, air it up after the tie-down. Shouldn't take much to reduce motion. I always criss-cross the rear tie-downs. The car always moves side ...
