Re: Beehive Valve Springs
As to any engines of mine that were torn down after winning the Runoffs, the comment I generally received was "It's nice to see one entirely legal for a change". Thank you in advance, Mike What babble! How long ago did one of your engines win the Runoffs? Assuming your engine was in the s...

Re: Beehive Valve Springs
Mike, and everyone else that thinks the "previously machined surface" concept applies to just about anything on a Vee engine, let alone anything on a Vee: Please reread the rules. That terminology appears only in one section, 9.1.1.C.5.D.6, specific to achieving the correct compression ra...

Re: Beehive Valve Springs
While we're at it..... If we take the GCR C.1.B. paragraph statement referring to "standard configuration" literally, does anyone have a problem with not using a gasket or using 2 gaskets in an application such as the oil pump cover, or not using a gasket between the case and the cylinder?...

Re: Beehive Valve Springs
Brian and Bruce, I thank you both for sharing your opinions. I would still appreciate your opinion(s) on what constitutes cleaning up such a surface as the spring pocket or any of the others that I mentioned, and what constitutes a significant amount. I would also appreciate knowing any factory dime...

Re: Beehive Valve Springs
Care to define "significant" for us? Are we allowed to clean them up or "true" them? If what you say is true, does it apply to other areas likewise. such as resurfacing the cyl. seats on the case, the sump seat, oil pump seat, rocker box surface? I thought previously machined sur...

Re: warning. dont do this
The AS41 VW case. (What most are probably using) is Mag alloy AS41 (4% aluminum and 1% Silicon) thus AS41. Lots of acids will destroy it fast. Alumibrite is up to 10% Phosphoric and 10% Hydrofluoric acid. It will eat up a case pretty fast. It can be used at much longer periods with Aluminum cases. ...

Here's the Engine Deal! SOLD.
Taking inventory, I find I have WAY more engines than I need (can't seem to make myself stop building them), so I am auctioning some off. This is a former Runoffs engine, which I just fully rebuilt and dynoed. It is a strong National engine, complete from deep sump to fuel pump, and pressure plate t...

It should be no different (or only SLIGHTLY higher) at 80 degrees F.fvracer27 wrote:I don't think it's the case but I could be wrong. When at normal temps meaning engine warm and oil temp at 170+ looking at my date the pressure is perfect. As long as the oil gets warm there seems to be no problems.

Re: Engine oil Viscosity
Well during the warmer weather it is high but not like it was when it was chilly. I just have to remember to get the engine up to at least 100 deg before any real rpms are reached. I'm was still running 10W30 and my season is over now. Here's the deal....That weight oil should be just fine. Your pr...

Re: Engine oil Viscosity
Jim what do you think about 5W30 or 5w40 so the oil is a little thinner on start up? With the full Flow type of systems the oil pressure is through the roof until the engine warms up and 2 weekends ago it was extremely cold here in NH and on start up my data showed 132lbs at idle and I was rushing ...

Re: 77MM Pistons?
Flexing? Are we talking about the crank bending or twisting along it's axis? Bending I think the front pulleys crack do to twisting. There is a loading and then unloading of forces that causes a vibration in the pulley. Having a fan belt in use a stock engine might help the situation. I've had engi...

That would be Darrell Bailey. He lived in Lamar, CO. and modeled them somewhat after the Vista of Don Courtney. Very aerodynamic design. We lost Darrell a long time ago. He was in the stands watching a race with (I believe) his son-in-law when "The Big One" hit. FYI, I have a Predator chas...

Tiago,
Are you saying the diameter of the shock body threads is 2 1/16? What is the I.D. of your spring? Give me a day or so to look. I have quite a bit of that stuff.

Dykes Ring Spacers
I have a rather large quantity of good used dykes ring spacers, both for Pacific and C&A rings. Before I go through the bother of qualifying and packaging them, is there any interest?

Factory Cam Gears
I have for sale 4 of the VW factory cam gears. These are new original equipment and in perfect condition. They are all the narrower version which saves power by being lighter, but also because they are narrower they do not have to squish as much oil out when meshing. These gears are legal factory ge...

Re: Bleedin' clutch slave...
Barry, Interesting post. While I would certainly attend to the master (maybe gutting it and putting a dab of braze, if only for the test), I will venture a guess that as long as the slave sitting for that long hasn't generated a pit in the bore, a light hone and new seals will correct the problem. B...

Great posts, guys! Question on the adjustors: I have gone back and forth on the straight vs. angled adjustors. Is it the general consensus that the angled (tapered) are better? (I just set a friend up with the straights...gulp). Which were the successors from VW? Also, after 40 years of dealing with...

Re: July Minutes
The FV Ad Hoc Committee met on July 24 ...snip... One of the issues with the Chinese cylinders is the narrow shoulder on the barrel that fits against the engine case. If this shoulder were made wider ( as in the original VW and aftermarket cylinders), then that would solve one of the problems inher...

Stan, Just a couple of points to add to the conversation: Are you not aware that there are now readily available and very reasonably priced 1200cc piston/cylinder sets, right there in your state? Also, to say that "we know how fast they are at every track in the country" is a gross oversta...
