Re: Max RPM on straight
You also want to check your tach, Some are really far off. Mine's 300-400 RPM off at 6000. It may not answer why you're 1500 RPM shy in top gear, but it may be reading too low all the time and you may be beating up your engine by spinning it too fast in the lower gears.

Re: Data Acquisition
Jim & Brian, very good points - I agree with both of you. I agree that you can do a lot for $1000 (more than I'm willing to spend at this point), but also whether the cars are sloppy or not, data is data and can help tell you what's going on - like that something is improving as you make modific...

Re: Data Acquisition
It's interesting that the web sites suggest that GPS can provide a more accurate track mapping and track timing than the accelerometers. I guess that it all depends on the quality of the components that racers can afford to buy for accelerometers (or lack of quality). Without gyros, you can't easily...

Re: Crankcase ventilation
The smoke seemed to coincide with the right-hand turns heading away from the camera. Were those corners longer than the ones on the way back up the course?

Re: Fuel testing rules
As a Vee guy, I viewed the SCCA's fuel rules as a way to force us to support the racing fuel industry, when we'd be happy running just inexpensive pump fuel. It's a significant additional expense!

Re: On board camera suggestions
Ed & Jpetillo, What model Sony camera are you using? I'm using a Sony DCR-TRV320, which allows a remote camera, mic. and Lanc control (control it from the cockpit). It's an older DV tape camcorder, but I had it and it works! The benefit about mounting the camera where you want is that you don't...

Re: Bead Seats or Alternatives
Brian and Dave, thanks! Yes, my daughter will need a good amount of space made up, and I'm certainly worried about ending up not compromising seat strength in the process. It sounds like the bead seat would give us the ability to try a lot of positioning options so that the seat works and the belts ...

Bead Seats or Alternatives
I was wondering what experiences people have had with fitting/forming bead seats. I was looking at bead seats last year, and remember finding information on an alternative, but similar, seat that didn't take the ~1 hours of sitting-in-it time that the bead seats take. But, I can't find where I stuff...

Re: Latest Fastrac
You seem to believe that the majority of FVs are at the existing minimum weight. Kevin, I'm sorry that I gave you that impression. I don't believe that at all. It seems impossible to state anything clearly enough on the forum to not get misunderstood. What I was trying to say is probably better sta...

Re: Latest Fastrac
It would take a significant performance enhancer to get us even close. You would need something like split fire spark plugs. <g> Maybe 8 of them. Jim Jim, That was pretty funny. Just when I thought I might have made a mistake with my response earlier, you've given me reason to be hopeful. I like th...

This is not a hijack to this topic. If you have anything to share on this, please make that opinion known to the CRB, and the FV committee, and start another topic if you feel it is deserved - after you have made your view known to the official channels. Perhaps they can allow us another power incr...

Re: New HANS device info
There is no consideration of brain energy in the design of the HANS. The body and the neck must move as a unit to prevent neck injury. I think we agree completely on that point. Adding a damper is not practical. How much distance is available for the damping function before you cause a neck injury,...

Re: New HANS device info
I'm not sure we want our head and body to decelerate together. There's a balance, I believe. Assuming that it's the straps holding us in, we do want our head and body to accelerate together so that we don't hurt our necks. There doesn't seem to be a perfect solution for this, but the tethers help in...

Re: New HANS device info
Isaac Device Nice, I hadn't seen this before! I knew when I hit "Gearheads click here" that they'd mess on the physics explanation. Oh well. Anyway, it appears that they found a neat way to use dampers, and have a nice product as a result. Daryl, how easy is it to get out of the car? Do y...

Re: New HANS device info
I don't know how true it is, but I heard and/or read about the cost diffrences in several places last year when I was looking. Supposedly there's more manual work required in the manufacturing process for the higher angle models to get a sufficiently consistent performance, and that's what the price...
