Re: Aftermarket shock mounting
You can make a spacer to the required wall thickness out of pop can aluminum to wrap (a couple wraps or so) around the bolt or stud, top or bottom. I did this for a number of years and it worked fine. I have since tapped the upper shock tower mount to 1/2-20 which works with my upper offset shock mo...

Re: Run-offs camping
There have been a lot of changes at RA over the past 3-4 years. There are now motorhome areas spread around the track and there is a designated camping area inside the Carousel (with showers). The new bathroom complex between the paved and grass paddock areas is quite large and includes showers thou...

Re: Digital version of Frank Scheultheis's Scrutineer's handbook
I don't believe copyrights expire like patents do. It would really be best to contact Frank to see it he feels it should be in the public domain. We would all benefit by having copies of this seminal FV document. It may not all apply today, but it is still the basis of many rules discussions and dec...

I second Steve's concern about the side gears. I don't see the ring and pinion very often, but those axles, side gears and fulcrum plates always look "worse for the wear".

Roz Rosintoski was there. I just got my evaluation set from him today. He may send you one as well so I'd wait a couple days to see if you get some samples. In anycase, his phone # is 607-217-4797. I can't seem to log on to his website: http://www.rozphoto.com For some reason my photos just don't se...

Re: Tranny fluid options
The difference between normal engine oil and differential capable gear lube was and I assume still is that the gear lube has special additives to handle the extra sliding that occurs with "hypoid" gears http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypoid These oils are typically called "EP" for ...

Re: Tranny fluid options
I used Mobil 1 Synthetic gear lube the first couple years I raced (mid-'90's). I seemed to work fine but may not have been quite as "trick" as the somewhat lighter weight Redline I use now. I don't know if it's still available and is the same stuff it was then. Oils are always changing...

Re: June meeting notes
Actually, my brother lives in "Sheboiken" and has for many years. He informs me that the number of hotel rooms in the area has increased dramatically over the past 10-15 years primarily to support the enormous charter fishing business (not to mention the new golf courses, etc.). He feels t...

June Sprints: mea culpa
Though not explicitly accused (thank you Mike), I plead guilty: a bit over aggressive considering the weather... It was a VERY stressful race as long as it lasted (competitively) for me. There was no split start so the Vees were immediately negotiating through a slalom course of slow F500's that wer...

Re: Low turnouts
I tend to agree with Steve's opinion. Most FV guys I know are very cost conscious. We all love the class, and the competition, and the comradary, but the low cost is very important component in why we choose to race the cars we do. You might think of FV as the "canary" of SCCA road racing ...

Scott, What video editing program are you using to translate the video to a final edited form. I use Sony's Movie Studio Platinum. At version 6, it won't import the .mov file from my Aiptek HD DVR. First converting it to .wmv using Windows Media Encoder 9 (download from MSoft) brings it in OK. It's ...

Re: Trailer e-track install - best location for a FV?
Like Keith, I also strap around the axle on the casting between the spring plate flange and the backing plate. It's strong, provides some lateral location and also it doesn't move up and down much as the car moves on its suspension in the trailer. Like Brian says, I have seen tires go down while tow...

Re: Forever Leaking trans
Jim, A couple ideas/suggestions: 1. I concur with the advice so far given. 2. Have you tried to rinse down the side cover and boot areas before a session and then locating the source of the leak after the session. If you can isolate it to the exact source, it will be easier to determine the proper f...

Re: Brake Master Cylinder Sizing
There are lots of options, depending how much you are willing to change. Remember, if you increase the master cyl. diameter, it will require higher pedal pressures for the same braking force. I redesigned my brake pedal for more leverage AND went to 5/8 x 5/8 cylinders to get the pedal effort where ...

Re: Roller Wheel Bearing Adjustment
Brian, The math does add up as you say, however, they are targeting .001" to .003" endplay which I would not call "preload". The 1/4 turn overtighten is to move the grease and bearings around to make sure everything's metal to metal. THEN you back off to a small amount of endplay...

Re: Roller Wheel Bearing Adjustment
Greg, I've been using roller bearings for most of my time racing FV's. In that time, I've always used spacers and a shim pack between the inner races. I shim to .001" - .003" end play (cold) measured with a dial indicator and mag base. This is true end play, not rocking of the drum. I've n...

Re: How Much oil?
Funny, I was going to post almost the same thing Steve just did, but then decided I didn't want to muddy the waters. But since he has, I want to agree with him. I believe that a cold engine retains more of the oil in the heads, and upper crankcase than a hot engine because the viscosity is higher. S...

Hoosier's sponsorship of the test day is a great contribution to the FV community. I hope I can make it there to take advantage of it!

It's quite amusing monitoring the on-line reactions to things like this... Some complain if a change makes it harder to get the car right, others complain if a change makes it easier. ANY change is bad for some, some want spec tires, others a higher minimum weight to level the playing field for larg...
