In-Car Radio Recommendations

Post by jpetillo »

I was wondering what you folks are using for radios, and what you'd recommend. Thanks!

We seldom use them in our Vee's anymore. In short sprint races they are sometimes handy (Green Flag spotters, and maybe a corner spotter), but not of much use other than that. With all the inexpensive in-car lap timers available, radios are't even needed for that.

We have used the Kenwood's most of the time. (If you go with a Race Car setup, remember that you will need a "long track" version. They are higher power and you will require them at most road courses to talk to a driver on the "back side" of the course.

If you are handy with audio electronics the cheapest way is to buy a couple of the cheap "Family" band radios. You will want to get a good helmet mic and good semi custom ear pieces, but you can put together a nice operating setup for under $500. (vs. $1000) for a true "Race Car" set up.

BTW, We sell Radio Systems for Racing. So if you do decide to go with the commercial set up, give us a call.

Jim, Thanks for the info. I may have to get radios for another purpose, and then would just have to get a driver headset for the car. John
