Wheels studs vs. bolts
Wheels studs vs. bolts
ny pros and cons of going to studs?
I see these available - marketed as "competition" http://www.jbugs.com/product/70-2810.ht ... studs-nuts
They are the press-fit type, not the screw-in type stud that is also available.
Recommendations and advice appreciated.

I've used screw in studs for 20 years. Install with locktite and grind the backside flush to clear the brakeshoe retainers. Use the ones with an allen head recess and check tightness early on until it's evident that they won't loosen in use. I got the perfect nuts to match the chamfer in the wheel at a Honda parts counter.

That's what I needed to know, thanks Bob.

Jim,
I agree with Bob, but the nuts and studs are available at several places. CIP1 sells some kits, but they vary in price. USED to be relatively cheap, but suddenly about 2 years ago, they shot through the roof. I haven't checked there lately, but studs in different lengths and nuts are also available at race-studs.com. They also have 12mm AND 14mm ..and there are also some studs that ADAPT from 14mm to 12mm.. so you can retap the hub but continue to use the same smaller size nuts if one strips out. Make sure you get 'BALL' type nuts. There are quite a few variances in 'types' of nuts, but our wheels will ONLY work (properly) with the BALL type.
That was one of the FIRST things I intended to do when I started FV some 35 years ago.. but I only FINALLY got around to doing it 3 years ago ... I'm NOT very smart .

Re: Wheels studs vs. bolts
I am with Steve and Bob on this….
Just did the research:
Studs $3.96 for 5... http://www.ebuggies.com/Wheel-Studs-M12 ... 9516-0.htm
…OEM… Honda lug nuts from Ebay…. $23.00 for 20
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-HONDA-FACTO ... 27e06da1e1
The Empi (CIP1 kit?) lug nuts are not ball seat. You have to be very careful as most bugle/acorn style nuts are just tapered.

Re: Wheels studs vs. bolts
Good info guys, my studs and nuts are ordered and on their way. Changing tires while the drums are still hot is entertaining and convinced me the old bolts have to go!

Steve, Brian, Bob
Do you think locktite is good enough? No need to tack them in?

Brian,
I generally use RED loctite. I don't think the regular blue will take the heat generated under braking. I have had to braze 1 set in - they just wouldn't stay put.

Re: Wheels studs vs. bolts
I did red loctite at the beginning of the season, changed all tires at least twice per weekend (trailer tires vs. leaker american racers) and zero problems. If you haven't gone to studs yet, you will be loving them immediately!
