Our transmission (and vee) took a hit from a spec racer ford and is pretty close to destroyed. One axle shaft and wheel was competely removed by the first srf to hit me, the left one is still intact. When we were taking the car apart to start a rebuild (it is a 1976 zink z-12 and will need more than cosmetetic surgery) we could not figure how to get the left axle out of the transmission. Any suggestions will be appreciated on getting the axle out of the transmission. Meanwhile Hillsborough Community College will handle the chassis at their automotive technology academy and we will handle the mechanics and race our new vee.

john:

Assuming that you do not have the split case trans, removing the axle requires removing the axle tube (drum, backing plate, bearing retainer, axle bearing- which is all explained in any VW manual).

Under the axle tube retainer plate is a daisy and behind this is the axle circlip with a retainer ring. This circlip must be removed (with a large pair of circlip pliers) and then the axle comes out.
Hope this helps
